Social media has become part of almost every wedding, from the engagement announcement to the final reel. Done well, it is a lovely way to share your joy with friends and family near and far. Done badly, it can feel stressful and distracting. In this post I share my favourite wedding social media ideas for every stage of the journey, along with a few tips to keep things fun and relaxed so you can stay present on the day itself.

Before the Wedding
The build-up is a brilliant time to share. Post your engagement story, a few favourites from your engagement shoot and sneak peeks of the planning process, from dress fittings (without showing the dress) to cake tastings and venue visits. A countdown series in your stories is a fun way to get guests excited.
Engagement shoots are perfect for this stage. You get beautiful, professional images to share, and you also get used to being in front of the camera. My guide to pre-wedding photoshoots has lots of inspiration, and it is one of my favourite wedding social media ideas for couples who feel camera shy.
Create a Wedding Hashtag
A personalised hashtag makes it easy to find every photo your guests post. Keep it short, memorable and easy to spell. Play on your surnames, use a pun or add the year. Before you settle on one, search for it on Instagram to make sure nobody else is already using it. Pop it on your website, invitations and signs at the venue so guests remember to use it.
On the Day
This is where it pays to plan. You will not want to be scrolling on your phone during your own wedding, so ask a friend to manage your stories for the day, or book a content creator to capture and share clips for you. That way you stay present while your followers still get to feel part of the celebration. Of all the wedding social media ideas I suggest, delegating is the one couples thank me for most.

Consider an Unplugged Ceremony
Phones in the aisle can block your photographer’s view and distract from the moment. Many couples now ask guests to put their phones away during the ceremony, then share freely afterwards. A sign at the entrance or a friendly announcement from your officiant works well. Your guests will get to enjoy the ceremony properly, and you will see their faces rather than their screens in your photographs.
More Wedding Social Media Ideas to Try
- A photo booth or selfie station. Fun props and a branded backdrop.
- QR codes on tables. Link guests to a shared album for uploads.
- Day-after reels. A short montage set to your first dance song.
- A guest takeover. Let a friend post stories from the evening party.
- Behind-the-scenes clips. Getting ready, last-minute nerves and funny moments.
After the Wedding
Sneak peeks from your photographer are perfect for your first post as a married couple. Then share a fuller selection once your gallery arrives, along with your highlight film. Tag your suppliers if you are happy to: it is a lovely way to thank them, and other couples will find them through you. Simple wedding social media ideas like this help small businesses enormously. Anniversaries are another great moment to reshare favourites.
When you are ready to choose which images to post, pick a mix of portraits, details and candid moments. Close-ups of rings, flowers and stationery make great carousel posts too. These tell the story of your day far better than a run of posed shots, and they are a good reminder that the best wedding social media ideas are built on great content from the start.
Etiquette Tips
Let guests know your preferences in advance, especially if you would rather they did not post before you do. Be thoughtful about sharing photos of children without parents’ permission, and remember that not everyone loves seeing themselves online. A gentle note on your wedding website covers all of this nicely.
