There are not many places where you can say your vows inside a Tudor fort with the sea crashing on the other side of the walls. A Southsea Castle wedding offers exactly that, along with sweeping views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. As a wedding photographer who works all along this stretch of coast, I wanted to put together a guide to what makes the castle so special, how the day usually flows and where you will find the best spots for photos.

A Little History

Southsea Castle was built in 1544 as part of Henry VIII’s chain of coastal defences. Local legend says the king watched his flagship, the Mary Rose, sink in the Solent from close by the following year. The castle has been altered many times since, gaining a lighthouse and Victorian additions, and today it is run by Portsmouth City Council as a heritage attraction and events venue. Walking across the approach to the castle gate is a moment every Southsea Castle wedding guest remembers for years.

Ceremony Spaces at the Castle

The council lists three licensed spaces for ceremonies: the Marquee, which seats up to 120 guests, and two smaller rooms called the Workshop and the Keep, which each seat up to 60. That gives you real flexibility, whether you are planning an intimate ceremony with close family or a bigger celebration with all your friends. Ceremonies are booked through the Portsmouth register office, and the museums and events team at the castle can talk you through availability and packages.

The marquee sits within the castle courtyard and is used for the wedding breakfast and evening reception too, so once the ceremony is over you can move straight into drinks among the old walls and cannons.

What a Southsea Castle Wedding Day Looks Like

Every couple is different, but a typical day might run like this:

  • Bridal preparations at a nearby hotel or at home in Southsea or Portsmouth
  • Guests arriving across the approach to the castle gate
  • Your ceremony in the Keep, the Workshop or the Marquee
  • Drinks and canapés in the courtyard, with plenty of time for relaxed group photos
  • A short wander with your photographer along the seafront for couple portraits
  • Wedding breakfast, speeches and dancing in the marquee

Because a Southsea Castle wedding happens right on the water, I always suggest building a little time into the afternoon for portraits. Twenty minutes is enough to make the most of the setting without missing your own drinks reception.

The Best Photo Spots In and Around the Castle

The castle itself gives you thick stone walls, cannons, the lighthouse and the moat, all full of texture and character. Step outside the gate and you have Southsea Common, the Rock Gardens and the promenade on your doorstep. Some of my favourite places to take couples on a Southsea Castle wedding day are:

  • The castle walls and ramparts, for wide shots with the sea behind you
  • The approach to the gate, which makes a striking frame for arrival photos
  • The Rock Gardens, which are sheltered from the wind and full of greenery
  • The promenade and beach shelters, for a playful, seaside feel

Planning Tips

A coastal venue brings a few things to think about. The seafront can be breezy, even in summer, so a spare hair grip and a plan for the veil are worth having. The area around the castle is also a busy public space at weekends, so I work quietly around passers-by and choose angles that keep the focus on you. For a Southsea Castle wedding in the cooler months, the indoor rooms and the marquee keep everyone warm, while the low winter sun over the Solent can be absolutely stunning for photographs.

It is also worth thinking about transport. Parking along the seafront fills up quickly on sunny days, so a shuttle or coach for guests from your hotel can make life easier for everyone.

Making the Most of Your Photographs

My style is relaxed and documentary, so I spend most of the day capturing the real moments as they unfold: the nerves as you arrive, the laughter during the speeches and the first dance under the marquee lights. Historic venues like this one reward that approach, because the setting tells part of your story without needing to be staged.
