A pre wedding photoshoot, often called an engagement shoot, is a relaxed session with your photographer in the months before your wedding. It is one of my favourite things to offer couples, because it gives us a chance to get to know each other, try out a few prompts and take some lovely photos you can use for save the dates, a guest book or simply your own walls. If you are wondering whether it is worth it, where to go and what to wear, this guide is for you.

Why Book an Engagement Shoot?

The biggest benefit of a pre wedding photoshoot is confidence. Most people are not used to being photographed, and the first ten minutes in front of a camera can feel strange. By the time your wedding comes around, you will already know how I work, what my prompts feel like and how relaxed the whole process can be. That makes a real difference to your portraits on the day, when time is precious and nerves are high.

It is also a lovely excuse to spend an afternoon together doing something fun in the middle of all the planning. Many couples tell me their pre wedding photoshoot was the moment the wedding finally started to feel real.

Location Ideas Across Hampshire

Hampshire is brilliant for engagement shoots because there is so much variety within a short drive. A few of my favourite types of location are:

  • The coast. Southsea seafront, Hill Head or Lee-on-the-Solent give big skies and sea views.
  • Woodland. Dappled light through the trees feels romantic in every season.
  • Country parks. Staunton Country Park, Royal Victoria Country Park and Queen Elizabeth Country Park all offer open space and variety.
  • Historic places. Old Portsmouth, Portchester and Winchester have beautiful brick, flint and cobbles.
  • Somewhere meaningful to you. The beach where you had your first date or the park where you walk your dog.

The best pre wedding photoshoot location is usually one that feels personal. If you can, choose somewhere that means something to the two of you, as it shows in the photos.

When Is the Best Time?

Light is the most important ingredient. The hour or so before sunset, often called golden hour, gives soft, warm light that flatters everyone. Early mornings can be equally beautiful and much quieter at popular spots. Midday sun is harsher, so if that is the only time available, I will look for shade under trees or beside buildings. As for timing in your planning, booking your session three to nine months before the wedding works well, especially if you want images for save the dates.

What to Wear for Your Pre Wedding Photoshoot

Wear something you feel comfortable and confident in. Coordinate your outfits without matching exactly; complementary colours and textures look better than identical jeans and white shirts. Avoid big logos and very busy patterns, and think about the setting. Flowing dresses and soft knits look gorgeous in fields and woodland, while smarter outfits suit city streets. Comfortable shoes are a must if we are walking, and you can always bring a second outfit for variety.

Bring Your Dog

If you have a dog, bring them along. Some of my favourite engagement images include four-legged family members, and they often help nervous couples relax. A friend can come along to hold the lead for part of the session, so we can capture some portraits of just the two of you too.

What Happens on the Day?

A typical pre wedding photoshoot lasts around an hour. We start with a gentle walk and a chat, and I give you simple prompts rather than strict poses. You will walk, laugh, cuddle and probably feel a little silly at first, but within ten minutes most couples forget about the camera completely. Afterwards, you receive a gallery of edited images to download and share.
