Your photographer is one of the few suppliers who spends the whole day by your side, and the only one whose work you will look at for the rest of your life. No pressure, then. If you are wondering how to choose a wedding photographer when there are so many talented people out there, you are not alone. This step-by-step guide covers the things that genuinely matter, from style and personality to contracts and timings, so you can book with confidence and then forget about it.

Start With the Style You Love
Before you look at prices, look at photos. Spend an evening scrolling through portfolios and saving the images that make you feel something. You will quickly notice patterns. Perhaps you love bright, airy colours, or rich, moody tones. Maybe you are drawn to natural, candid moments rather than posed portraits. Understanding your taste is the first step in how to choose a wedding photographer, because the best photographer for you is the one whose everyday work already looks like the gallery you want.
If you are not sure what the different approaches are called, my guide to wedding photography styles in the UK explains the main options in plain English.
Look at Full Galleries, Not Just Highlights
Every photographer puts their best images on Instagram and their website. To understand how to choose a wedding photographer properly, ask to see two or three complete wedding galleries. A full gallery shows you how consistent they are across a whole day, in different lighting, in dark church interiors and on rainy afternoons. It also shows how they capture guests, details and the evening party, which matter just as much as portraits.
Meet Them, Even Over Video
Personality matters more than most couples expect. Your photographer will be with you during some of the most emotional and private moments of your life, so you need to feel comfortable around them. A quick video call or coffee is the best way to find out whether you click. Do they listen? Do they ask about you, rather than just talking about themselves? Do you feel relaxed? If the answer is yes, that comfort will shine through in your pictures, which is why chemistry is such an important part of how to choose a wedding photographer.
Ask the Right Questions
Here are some questions I recommend asking every photographer on your shortlist:
- How many weddings have you photographed, and in what types of venue?
- How would you describe your style on the day?
- What is included in your packages, and how long is the coverage?
- How many images will we receive, and how long until we get them?
- Do you have backup equipment and public liability insurance?
- What happens if you are ill on our wedding day?
- How much is the deposit, and when is the balance due?
Clear, confident answers are a good sign. When learning how to choose a wedding photographer, remember that a professional should be happy to explain anything you are unsure of.

Understand What You Are Paying For
Prices vary widely, so compare like for like. Check the hours of coverage, the turnaround time, whether an album is included and whether travel is covered. A cheaper package with fewer hours might cost more in the end if you need to add time later. My packages page lists exactly what is included at each level, which makes comparisons easier.
Read the Contract
Never book without a written contract. It should set out the date, hours, deliverables, payment schedule, cancellation terms and what happens if either party needs to postpone. A good contract protects both of you. If anything seems vague, ask for it to be clarified in writing before you sign.
How to Choose a Wedding Photographer When You Love Several
It happens all the time. If you are torn between two or three brilliant photographers, go with your gut. Think about who made you feel most at ease, who seemed most excited about your plans and whose work made you feel something emotional. Availability often makes the final decision for you, too, as popular dates book up well over a year in advance.
Book Early, Then Relax
Once you know how to choose a wedding photographer and have found the right person, secure your date with a deposit and then let them do their job. Trust is the final piece of the puzzle.
