There are not many places in England where you can get married surrounded by Roman walls, a Norman church and a medieval keep, all on the edge of the water. Portchester Castle is one of them. If you are dreaming of a day steeped in history, this guide to Portchester Castle wedding photography covers how weddings work here, my favourite spots for photos and how to plan your timeline so you get the most out of this incredible setting.

A Little History Behind the Walls

Portchester Castle sits at the top of Portsmouth Harbour, just outside Fareham. Its outer walls were built by the Romans in the late third century as part of the fort known as Portus Adurni, and they are still remarkably complete today. Inside, a medieval castle grew up around a tall stone keep, and over the centuries it served as a royal residence, a hunting lodge and even a prison. Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn are thought to have stayed here in 1535.

Today the castle is cared for by English Heritage and is open to visitors throughout the year, which is worth bearing in mind when planning your Portchester Castle wedding photography.

Getting Married at Portchester Castle

Most couples who marry at Portchester do so at St Mary’s Church, the beautiful Norman parish church that stands within the castle walls. Founded as a priory church in the twelfth century, it is nearly 900 years old, and walking through the old gateway towards it is a moment your guests will never forget.

As a parish church, St Mary’s can marry couples who live in the parish or have another qualifying connection, so it is worth checking your eligibility with the church office early on. Many couples then head on to a nearby reception venue in Fareham, Portsmouth or Southsea.

The Best Spots for Portchester Castle Wedding Photography

The grounds are packed with backdrops, and I love that they all feel completely different from one another:

  • The Roman walls. Huge, textured flint walls make a stunning, timeless frame for couple portraits.
  • The castle gateway. Arriving through the arch is a natural moment for candid photos of you and your guests.
  • The keep and inner bailey. The scale of the medieval keep gives a real sense of drama to wide shots.
  • The church porch and churchyard. Perfect for confetti, family groups and quiet moments straight after the ceremony.
  • The waterfront. Just outside the walls, the harbour edge gives you soft, open light and views across the water.

Planning Tips for Portchester Castle Wedding Photography

A little planning goes a long way at a historic site like this. These are the things I talk through with every couple marrying here:

  • Check permissions. Speak to the church and English Heritage in advance about ceremony times, access to the grounds and any rules for photography.
  • Expect visitors. The castle is a public attraction, so I work quietly around other visitors and pick angles that keep the focus on you.
  • Watch the wind. Being right on the harbour, it can get breezy. A spare hair grip and a plan for veils are always a good idea.
  • Leave time for portraits. Fifteen to twenty minutes after the ceremony is enough for a relaxed wander around the walls before you head to your reception.
  • Think about the light. The high walls create lovely shade on sunny days, which is very flattering for portraits.

Why Documentary Style Suits Portchester

My style is relaxed and candid. I document your day as it unfolds rather than staging every moment, which suits a place with this much character perfectly. In my experience, Portchester Castle wedding photography looks its best when it is relaxed and unposed. The walls, the church and the water do a lot of the work, and my job is to capture the real emotion happening in front of them: the nervous laughs, the happy tears and the moment your friends spot you walking through the gate.
