Photographs capture moments, but film brings back the sound of your vows, the laughter during the speeches and the way you moved on the dance floor. More and more couples are adding video to their plans, and the most popular format by far is the highlight film. If you are wondering what a wedding highlight video is, how long it should be and how to get the best from it, this guide covers everything you need to know.

What Is a Highlight Film?
A highlight film is a short, edited film that tells the story of your day, usually set to music and woven together with audio from your vows, speeches and readings. Rather than showing every moment in full, it picks out the best bits: the nerves of the morning, the first look, the ceremony, the confetti, the emotional speeches and the party. It is designed to be watched again and again, and shared with family and friends.
A wedding highlight video is usually between three and eight minutes long, though some couples prefer a shorter teaser of around a minute for social media.
What Does It Include?
- Getting ready. Hair, make-up, the dress, the suit and the nervous laughter.
- The ceremony. Key moments like the walk down the aisle, vows and first kiss.
- Drinks reception. Candid moments, guests mingling and confetti.
- Speeches. Short clips that capture emotion and humour.
- The evening. First dance, the party and a few quiet moments together.
The magic of a good wedding highlight video is in the edit. Music, pacing and audio all work together to create an emotional, cinematic story that feels like you.
Highlight Film vs Full-Length Film
A full-length or documentary edit shows your ceremony and speeches in full, often running for an hour or more. It is a wonderful record, especially for older relatives, but it is something you might watch once a year. A highlight film is the one you will share and rewatch. Many couples choose both, but if budget is limited, the highlight film is usually the priority.

How to Get the Best Wedding Highlight Video
A few simple things make a big difference. Good audio is essential, so make sure your officiant and speech-givers are happy to wear a small microphone, or let your videographer place a recorder nearby. Allow a little time in your schedule for a short couple session, ideally around golden hour. And try to relax: the more natural you are, the better the film will feel.
It also helps to think about music. Most videographers use licensed tracks, so let yours know your favourite genres and any songs that mean something to you. If you love a specific song, ask whether it can be used, as commercial tracks can be tricky to license.
How Long Does It Take?
Editing a film takes time, so expect to wait a number of weeks for your finished film. Many videographers share a short teaser sooner, which is lovely to post on social media while you wait. Always ask about turnaround times before you book so you know what to expect.
Is a Wedding Highlight Video Worth It?
Ask almost any married couple and they will say video was worth it. Your day goes by in a blur, and film captures things you will never see otherwise: your partner’s reaction as you walked down the aisle, a grandparent laughing at the speeches, the sound of your vows. Many couples who skipped video tell me it is one of their biggest regrets.
Social clips are a lovely extra alongside a wedding highlight video. If you would like social media content as well as a film, a content creator can capture quick, social-ready clips throughout the day. Read what a wedding content creator does to find out more.

Choosing Your Videographer
Watch full films, not just short trailers, to get a feel for a videographer’s style. Look at how they tell a story, use audio and handle low light. Ask how they work on the day: a good videographer will be discreet and calm, capturing natural moments rather than directing everything.
