With four miles of seafront, Tudor fortifications, sheltered gardens and views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight, Southsea is a brilliant place for wedding portraits. Whether you are getting married in the town or nearby, here are my favourite wedding photo spots in Southsea, plus a few tips to help you make the most of them.

Couple walking in bright sunshine, the light you find at wedding photo spots in Southsea

1. Southsea Castle

Built by Henry VIII in the 1540s, Southsea Castle sits right on the water’s edge and is a wedding venue in its own right. The drawbridge, stone walls and old cannons make a dramatic backdrop, and the views across to the Isle of Wight are hard to beat. Even if you are not marrying here, the area around the castle is one of the most iconic wedding photo spots in Southsea.

2. The Rock Gardens

Tucked beside the seafront close to the castle, the Rock Gardens were completed in the 1920s and are full of winding paths, planting, pools and a little waterfall. They are sheltered from the wind, which makes them perfect for hair-friendly portraits on a breezy day, and the greenery gives a soft, romantic feel.

3. Canoe Lake

Canoe Lake has been a much-loved Southsea park since the 1880s. The water, mature trees and colourful floral displays give a calm, almost countryside feel just steps from the beach. It is a lovely option for relaxed couple portraits and fun shots with your wedding party.

4. Southsea Common and the Seafront Shelters

The wide open space of Southsea Common is ideal for big group photos and playful moments, while the classic seaside shelters along the promenade add a nostalgic touch. With the sea on one side and the town on the other, this stretch offers some of the most varied wedding photo spots in Southsea within a short walk.

5. Old Portsmouth and the Hot Walls

A short hop west takes you to Old Portsmouth, where the Round Tower, Square Tower and the Hot Walls arches give you historic brickwork and harbour views. The Hotwalls Studios bring a creative, colourful feel, and the cobbled streets are perfect for candid walking shots.

6. South Parade Pier

At the eastern end of the seafront, South Parade Pier gives you classic seaside character and views across the Solent. Golden hour here is something special, with the light dropping over the water and the pier silhouetted behind you.

Tips for Wedding Photo Spots in Southsea

  • Plan for the wind. The seafront can be breezy. Sheltered spots like the Rock Gardens are a great backup for veils and hair.
  • Time it with the light. Late afternoon and golden hour give the softest, most flattering light along the coast.
  • Expect crowds in summer. Weekends can be busy. I work around passers-by and choose angles that keep the focus on you.
  • Check permissions. If you are planning a large group shoot in a public space or a ticketed attraction, check with the venue or council first.
  • Keep travel short. Many of these locations are within walking distance of each other, so you can fit in two or three without losing much time with guests.
