Long, light evenings, warm sunshine and gardens in full bloom: summer is the most popular time of year to marry in the UK, and it is easy to see why. Whether you are planning a countryside celebration, a garden party or something by the sea, there is so much potential to create a relaxed, joyful day. In this post, I share my favourite summer wedding ideas for styling, food, guest comfort and photography, with a few practical tips for keeping cool.

Styling for Summer
Summer is the season for colour. Think bright, seasonal flowers such as peonies, sweet peas, cornflowers and garden roses, or go bold with citrus tones and wild meadow arrangements. Lighter fabrics, natural textures and plenty of greenery all feel fresh and relaxed. Outdoor ceremonies under a floral arch or in a walled garden are perfect at this time of year.
Tableware can lean into the season too, with coloured glassware, linen napkins and fresh fruit or herbs as decoration. Some of my favourite summer wedding ideas are the simplest, such as jam jars of wild flowers on long trestle tables.
Food and Drink
- Sharing platters and grazing tables. Relaxed and sociable.
- Barbecues and hog roasts. Perfect for a garden or barn party.
- Ice cream or gelato carts. A guaranteed crowd pleaser.
- Pimm’s, spritzes and lemonade stands. Refreshing drinks for the reception.
- Strawberries and cream. A classic British summer treat.
Keeping Guests Comfortable
Hot weather can be tiring, so think about comfort. Provide shade with parasols, gazebos or trees, and offer plenty of water. Fans and sun cream baskets are thoughtful touches. If your ceremony is outdoors, consider timing it for later in the afternoon when the sun is less intense. Thoughtful planning like this is one of the most underrated summer wedding ideas, and your guests will thank you for it.
Seaside Celebrations
The South Coast is perfect for summer weddings by the water. Many couples marry at a coastal venue, then head down to the beach for photographs, or host a relaxed evening at a beach bar. Note that legal ceremonies on public beaches are not usually possible in England, so most couples hold a celebrant-led ceremony on the beach after a legal ceremony elsewhere, or marry at a licensed venue with sea views such as Southsea Castle.

My guide to wedding photo spots in Southsea has ideas for beachside portraits.
Summer Wedding Ideas for Photography
Summer light is wonderful but can be harsh in the middle of the day. Bright overhead sun creates squinting faces and strong shadows, so I look for open shade for group photographs and portraits. The real magic happens in the evening. In June and July, golden hour can fall well after eight o’clock, so it is worth slipping out for ten minutes between courses or during the evening reception. Read more in my guide to golden hour wedding photos.
Sparkler exits, lawn games and outdoor dancing all make brilliant photographs at this time of year, so they are well worth adding to your list of summer wedding ideas.
Plan for the Weather
This is Britain, so even in July you need a backup plan. Make sure your venue has an indoor option or a marquee, and keep a few clear umbrellas handy. A summer shower can lead to beautiful, moody skies and fresh, glowing light afterwards. My guide to rainy day wedding photos has lots of reassurance.
Book Early
Summer Saturdays are the busiest dates of the year, so venues and suppliers book up quickly, often more than a year ahead. If you are flexible, a Friday or Sunday in summer can offer better availability and value, and midweek dates are worth considering too. Booking your key suppliers first gives you time to enjoy the fun summer wedding ideas later on. My wedding day timeline guide can help you plan around the long days.
