It is the question almost every couple asks me at some point: what happens if it rains? Living in England, there is always a chance of a shower, even in the middle of summer. But here is the good news. Rain does not ruin a wedding, and it certainly does not ruin the photographs. Some of my favourite images have been taken on wet, windswept days. In this guide, I explain how to get beautiful rainy day wedding photos and why a grey forecast is nothing to fear.

Why Rain Can Be Wonderful

Cloud cover acts like a giant softbox. Instead of harsh sunlight, squinting eyes and dark shadows, overcast skies give soft, even light that flatters everyone. Colours look rich and saturated, skin looks smooth and there are no hotspots to worry about. Wet ground reflects light beautifully, and puddles can create stunning reflections.

Rain also brings atmosphere. Guests huddle together under umbrellas, couples cuddle close for warmth and there is a sense of togetherness that feels romantic and real. Rainy day wedding photos often have a moody, cinematic quality that sunny days simply cannot match.

Clear Umbrellas Are Your Best Friend

If you buy one thing for your wedding, make it a couple of clear umbrellas. They keep you dry while letting light through, so your faces are not lost in shadow, and they look gorgeous in photographs. Coloured umbrellas can work too, especially if they match your colour scheme, but avoid dark or branded ones, which can cast unflattering tones. Ask your venue whether they have a stash for guests. A row of matching umbrellas makes rainy day wedding photos look styled and intentional.

Have a Plan B

Talk to your venue about wet-weather options for the ceremony, drinks reception and group photographs. Most venues have covered areas, porches, conservatories or large windows that work beautifully. Visit with your photographer if possible, or at least share photos of the indoor spaces, so we can plan where groups will happen if the heavens open.

Decide on a cut-off time for making the call, usually a few hours before the ceremony, and let your suppliers know. Knowing there is a plan takes the pressure off, and it means your rainy day wedding photos can be relaxed rather than rushed.

Group Photos in the Rain

Large group photographs can be tricky in the rain, so keep your list short and organised. Covered porches, doorways, staircases and barns all work well. If the rain eases, we can dash outside quickly for the big group shot. My wedding group photo list helps keep things efficient.

Embrace the Moment

The couples with the best rainy day wedding photos are those who embrace it. A quick dash outside under an umbrella, a kiss in the drizzle or a dance in the rain can become your favourite images. Wellies under a wedding dress, guests sheltering under trees and confetti thrown under a canopy all tell a story about your day. Your attitude matters more than the weather.

Practical Tips

  • Pack towels, spare shoes and a hairdryer.
  • Choose a hairstyle that copes with damp air.
  • Have waterproof mascara on hand.
  • Ask ushers to hand out umbrellas to guests.
  • Keep a microfibre cloth for glasses and lenses.

Indoor Rainy Day Wedding Photos

If it is pouring all day, we will make the most of the venue’s interiors. Window light is beautiful for portraits, and doorways, staircases and characterful rooms make lovely backdrops. Rain on the glass can add texture and mood to window portraits. I always scout the venue for the best indoor spots before the ceremony begins, just in case.

Do Not Let the Forecast Worry You

Weather forecasts change constantly in the run-up to a wedding, so try not to check them obsessively. Focus on the things you can control, such as your backup plan, umbrellas and a relaxed timeline, and let your suppliers worry about the rest. Whatever happens, I will adapt and find the best light and locations. You can see more of my approach in my guide to winter wedding photography.

If you want a photographer who will happily stand in the rain to get the shot, take a look at my packages or get in touch. I promise rainy day wedding photos can be every bit as beautiful as sunny ones.
