Instagram is where most couples share their wedding with the world, and the content you post becomes a lasting digital album that friends and family return to again and again. With a little planning, you can make sure your feed tells the story of your day beautifully, without spending your wedding staring at a phone. In this guide, I share practical tips for creating wedding Instagram content you will love, from reels and carousels to stories and captions.

Know What Works on Instagram

Different formats suit different moments. Reels are perfect for movement and music, such as your walk down the aisle, confetti or the first dance. Carousels let you share a run of images, from details and portraits to candid guest shots. Stories are ideal for quick, in-the-moment updates on the day itself, while single posts work well for that one perfect portrait.

Mixing formats keeps your feed interesting and gives you plenty of ways to share. The best wedding Instagram content usually combines polished professional images with raw, behind-the-scenes clips that show the real atmosphere of the day.

Plan a Shot List

Think about the moments you most want to share and let your photographer, videographer or content creator know. Popular ideas include the getting-ready chaos, the dress reveal, the first look, the aisle walk, confetti, a golden hour walk and the dance floor in full swing. My wedding group photo list is a great place to start for family photos.

Vertical vs Horizontal

Instagram favours vertical content, especially for reels and stories. If social media matters to you, make sure whoever is capturing your day knows to shoot some vertical footage and portrait-orientation images. Professional photographs can be cropped, but planning for vertical framing from the start gives better results.

This is one reason couples are booking content creators. They shoot on phones in vertical format by default, so your wedding Instagram content is ready to post straight away, often the same evening or next morning.

Details Make Great Posts

Close-up details are some of the most shareable images from any wedding. Rings, flowers, stationery, shoes, perfume and table settings all make lovely carousel slides. Ask your photographer to capture these early in the day while everything is fresh. Styled flat lays with your invitation suite can be a beautiful first slide in a carousel, and they give your wedding Instagram content a polished, magazine feel.

Captions and Hashtags

A short, heartfelt caption often works better than a long description. Share a favourite moment, a funny story or a thank you to your guests and suppliers. Add your personal wedding hashtag so guests can find each other’s posts, and tag your suppliers if you are happy to, as it helps other couples discover them. Thoughtful captions turn your posts into a story rather than a collection of pretty pictures.

Timing Your Wedding Instagram Content

There is no rush. Many couples share a few sneak peeks or phone clips in the first day or two, then post a fuller selection when their professional gallery arrives. Spacing your posts over a few weeks keeps the celebration going and gives you plenty of time to choose your favourites. Anniversaries are a lovely excuse to share again.

Stay Present on the Day

The biggest tip I can give is to put your phone down. Ask a friend to post stories for you, or book someone to capture content professionally. You only get one wedding day, and you will want to remember it through your own eyes rather than through a screen. Having someone else handle your wedding Instagram content means you can enjoy every moment with your guests.

Professional Help

If social media matters to you, consider booking a content creator alongside your photographer and videographer. My post on what a wedding content creator does explains more, and my wedding social media ideas post has plenty of inspiration. A good creator will talk to you beforehand about the moments you want captured, the style you love and how quickly you would like your clips, then work quietly in the background on the day.

I offer photography, film and content creation across Hampshire and the South Coast. If you would like beautiful wedding Instagram content without lifting a finger, take a look at my packages or get in touch.
